What have you enjoyed the most this term and why?
  • I have enjoyed doing impact because we got to make and sell things at the garage sale.
  • I have also enjoyed swimming because sometimes we get free time.
  • I have enjoyed doing book club because we get to read a book and share our tasks with our group.
What has been challenging this term and why?
  • Some of my IXL tasks have been really challenging because I don’t understand them but I can figure them out and aim to get 100 percent.
  • My MDR has been challenging because I can’t get 20/20 but I am aiming to.
  • My AWS has been challenging because there are questions that I still need to learn and sometimes I get them wrong.
What are you looking forward to next year?
I am excited for going on camp and being a Year six.

We would like you to give us an update on your homework challenge. Add photos.
What is your idea? Where are you at? Have there been any challenges so far that you have had to overcome?

For two weeks Whetu has been given a homework challenge. The homework challenge is that you have to use at least one milk bottle to create something original. My idea is to make a fairy house and put pink pom poms on it and little buttons for pebble stones. I haven’t started but I am ready to start and I have planned it all. I will use the lid for a little flower bed.

My roof will be corrugated cardboard painted pink with pink pom poms on the edge of the roof. There will be pink and purple trees around the house with a fence made of popsicle sticks. I can’t wait to see everybody else's.

At 12:02 am on Monday the 14th of November, Kaikoura was hit by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake. It damaged homes and at least two people died during it. I didn’t feel it, but people all over New Zealand did. A tsunami hit New Zealand’s east coast after the earthquake hit but the tsunami wasn’t serious.  There was lots of aftershocks 5.7, 5.2 and some smaller ones too. People had to get into helicopters and planes to keep safe. Buildings in Wellington had glasses smashing and all sorts of things that had been smashed and shook around. My Grandparents in Wellington were very scared when they felt the big earthquake. For New Zealand this means roads will be shut down buildings will also be shut down. Shops will be closed down and people's homes have been ruined.

In New Zealand Labour day is a public holiday held on the fourth Monday of October. It’s origins are traced back to the eight-hour working day movement that arose in the Wellington colony in 1840, because carpenter Samuel Parnell's refusal to work more than eight hours a day. In the late 19th Century labour groups called unions began to form in many industries. They tried to help workers fight for fair pay and safe working conditions. We have a day off school because since it Labor Day in New Zealand most work jobs like schools, government offices, and many businesses are closed.  So mostly all people get a break from their jobs. On Labour day I went exploring on the farm with Sophie and we took a picnic with us and in the evening after milking we had to feed the calves.

Last Friday it was the learning in the making conference.

Paracord Wristbands
My favourite workshop was Paracord Wristbands because it is also a survival bracelet and it can be used as friendship bracelets as well. I made a blue and pink one and learnt some new skills on how to use them.

Hotdog Pasta
I enjoyed making Hotdog Pasta and learning how to make such an easy dish that you can make yourself. I learnt that you need to stick dry pasta sticks through a sausage then boil it.

Team building
I did Team building with Ramai and we had solve team challenges together and learn how to communicate with each other and work as a team to solve tricky challenges.

Cooking
In the last breakout I did cooking and we made caramel slice. It was really fun to measure, mix and cut things then add them all together. Then eat it :)

In the holidays Sophie and I went to Auckland to stay with our Nana. At our Nana’s house we went to the Zoo. My favourite animal there was a Flamingo. We saw two asian Elephants and one Rhinoceros and a few other animals. The day before we went to the Zoo we went to the Auckland pools. It was an indoor pool with a massive slide with fast flowing water.

We also went to my Aunty Keryns and went shopping. Sophie brought a canvas and lip balm and I brought some clothes and hair pins. I had a great break (except for when I came home I had to start feeding calves again)

Term 3
Week 8
Term 3 Reflection
This week you are going to complete your Term 3 Reflection. This needs to be completed on a separate doc. Follow what is asked of you on the Mylearning.me slide.

Term 3 Reflection
What have you enjoyed the most this term and why?
  • I have enjoyed doing the Block run because it is nice to get out and get some fresh air.
  • I have also enjoyed doing handwriting because I like to see my handwriting improving each time.
  • I have enjoyed being challenged in Whetu because last year I felt like all of my work was way too easy for me.
What has been challenging this term and why?
  • My IXL has been challenging for me because sometimes I don’t understand what I am doing.
  • Sometimes my blog post has been challenging because sometimes I have no idea what to write.
  • My AWS 15 quick questions has been challenging because there are some things in there that I haven't learnt with my maths group yet but I am getting better each week.
What are you looking forward to next term and why?
I am looking forward to iMake because I would love to learn all of the skills for my impact project. I am also looking forward to finishing our impact project because we are going to be selling them at the Ngatea Garage sale.

Impact

My impact group is the Garage sale Group. We have started to plan what we are making to sell at the Ngatea Garage sale. Brooklyn and I are in a group and we have started to practice making bookmarks to sell. The next steps are to make our projects and finding a good price to sell them at. I am enjoying doing the planning and finding pictures on the internet to help us get an idea of what we should make. I am not enjoying finding the prices of our materials because I can’t really find any ideal prices for the materials we are using.

Art

For the last two weeks our homework was to make a project on a polystyrene cylinder. I got my idea from when I was holding mum’s diamond ring and thought it would be a good idea for my project.

My dad and my brother helped me. My brother carved a diamond to show me how to do it, then I carved my own, but It was not as good as his.

Then my dad cut out the ring part for me. First of all I painted it. I had to wait till the next day for it to dry. Then I covered the ring in tin-foil to give it a shiny effect. Last of all I stuck the diamond on with a hot glue gun then it was ready to take to school the next day. At the end I thought my project could have been more creative when I looked at everyone else’s, but I still liked the idea of a ring. When I looked at everyone else’s I liked Cruz’s hamburger and chips I thought it was really awesome. Here is the finished product.

Cross Country

Cross Country was nerve wracking. I came first just like the following years, but I was so nervous. What if I slipped over and dropped back into last place. I felt so tired after. My legs were aching and they still are. The training around the block might have worked I don’t really know because it just felt like I was running my normal pace. I made it into Hauraki Plains and I hope that I can come first just like last year. I really hope I do well and wish for everyone else from Ngatea Primary School to do well too. My goals are to make in to Thames Valley Cross Country.

Term 3
Week 3
Goal Reflections
This week we would like you to reflect on your Term 3 goals. What are your Numeracy and Literacy goals for the term? What other goals do you have? Are you on track to achieve your goals? What do you need to do achieve your goals? What has been your favourite part of the year so far and what are you looking forward to this term?

My Term 3 Goals
My Term 3 maths goals are to practice my Roman Numerals so I know them off by heart.
I need to practice my measurements like MM ML Grams and Litres to help me with my AWS and MDR.
I need to memorise these measurements and Roman Numerals.
I want to learn the degrees of shapes.
I want to understand how to do this. I need to book a conference to get some help.
Long division is something I also need to work on.
I just need lots of practice with long division.

My literacy goal is to use more descriptive words. By using a dictionary and reading more will help me achieve this goal.
I also need to understand what I’m reading rather than just reading the words and not understanding it.
I have really enjoyed the block run and I am looking forward to Cross Country.
I loved the movie day and I can’t wait for the picnic.
Last year everything in Whenua was to easy and I was bored.
I like being in Whetu because I feel challenged.

Olympic Games 2016
The Olympic Games are the world’s biggest sporting spectacle. This year the Olympic Games are held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from the 5th to the 21st of August 2016. Rio was first discovered in 1502 by Portuguese explorers, who believed the bay they encountered (now called Guanabara Bay) was the mouth of a river.

There are forty-two sports represented in the Olympic Games some are: Judo, Fencing, Taekwondo and some other ones. I am looking forward to watching the Olympic Games because I want to see the different sports that aren’t done in New Zealand. There are 207 nations competing in the Olympic Games. There are over 10,000 athletes participating in this year’s Olympics.

Term 3
Week 1
Holiday Recount
This week’s blog post is going to be a time for you to share with your blogging audience what you did in the holidays. You do NOT have to give us a blow-by-blow account of what you did every day! I’d like you to choose one or two things that you did in the holidays that you can explain in detail about.

My Holidays

In the holidays my cousins from London came to New Zealand and stayed at my house. Their names are Lucia, Ben, Genevieve and Gabriella and my Uncle is named Shaun and my Aunty is named Trish, but that’s not her real name her real name is Petrisha we just call her Trish for short. Their kids also have accents but their parents don't because they were born in New Zealand and their kids were born in London. They stayed in their campervan and it is massive. Sophie and I got to stay in the campervan for two nights and it was awesome.
I also went to Lincraft and got a mini chalkboard on a easel stand. After that we went to warehouse stationery and got a little set that had note pads and sticky notes and things like that.

This week you have two options…
Option 1:
If you went Ice Skating last week tell us all about it! What happened? How was the Events Centre set up? What was the ice made out of? How well did you do?
Option 2:
The Field Days...what are the Field Days all about? Where are they held? Why are they held? Tell us about them.

                              Blog post
When the Ice Skating rink was up and running I went there with my Dad and my other siblings after school. I didn’t go at school because I wanted to skate with my Dad and my siblings. At first ,I was really bad and fell over all of the time but as I kept on practising I got better and better until I didn’t fall over at all! The event centre was set up with buntings over the rink with inflatable sides to lean on. The ice was like a plastic fibreglass kind of thing. I got blisters from the skates I did wear socks but the boots were quite high. I enjoyed skating,my Dad had a go and he fell over heaps and I skated with him and all the other adults were laughing at him.(I am going to write about both things)The Field days is a big day when lots of people come. My Dad,Mum and family come to the Field days. My Dad likes to have a look at all of the farm materials and tools.(And he always chats so that gives me and Sophie time to go and find something to do.)The NZ National Agricultural Fieldays is held at Mystery Creek Events Centre, 125 Mystery Creek Road, Hamilton, in the North Island of New Zealand. The New Zealand National Field days is a not-for-profit organisation  that relies heavily on volunteer contribution. I think that the Field days are held because they want to get everyone together and can show off all the machinery and tools that are there.

This term you have all created (or are creating) a piece of string art. Please write a reflection about your art. Explain why and how you came up with your design and then the process that you went through to create your art.

String art
This term’s first piece of art has been string art. String art has been a piece of art that gets done in the afternoon rotations. It was hard to find a template for my art, I couldn't find a template so I just went with a plain L. It was challenging for me because every time I tried to put the string around the nails it kept on falling off and I had to start all  over again. I did white string on my L and found it hard to find a color that would look nice. It was nice to see everyone’s different templates and choices. I like the way my art turned out and I am so excited to find out what our next art will be!

                 Blog post
NZ celebrates the Queen’s birthday because we are a part of the Commonwealth that is why we have the Union Jack on our national flag. The Queen’s actual birthday is on the 21st of April but is celebrated as a public holiday on the first Monday of June.

The Queen is 90 years old and was crowned to be Queen on the 2nd of June 1953. The Queen’s birthday is celebrated on different dates in different places in the world. For the Queen’s birthday weekend I do not know if my family and I are going anywhere to celebrate the Queen’s birthday.

Interesting
Last Friday I had my first iDrive and I really enjoyed it. I didn't really know what iDrive was until Friday as it was my first time doing it. For iDrive I chose to do zentangling and I  drew a flamingo and zen tangled all of the patterns I knew on it.
I did want to go into the baking group but that's alright hopefully I can get to have a go at it this week and bake something nice and fun.
It was interesting seeing all the different zentangle patterns and shapes. There was zentangle Puppies and Foxes and lots of different animals with different shapes and sizes. I was going to draw a zentangle Owl but I had already done one before.

This week for my maths worksheet I tried something new by working a problem out differently in a way that was easier. I am also proud of my AWS because I zoomed through it and it was fun. I had a great week and I was proud of all most everything. I enjoyed doing kapa haka with my house group and I was better than the last time I did it.

                             My Holidays

In my holidays on the first Saturday I played netball. When the game was done Charli and I went to Jump for her birthday. When we left Jump we went to the movies and watched Zootopia. I stayed the night at Charli’s house then her mum took me home the next morning. I stayed at home for most of the second week and my cat Patchy I got for my birthday had six cute kittens. Sophie and I went up to Auckland and stayed at my Nana’s for three nights. We went shopping with my Aunty because Nana couldn't drive because she has an injured foot with stitches. We played mini golf around the world in Auckland where there were big fake animals that moved. At Nana’s house we made big butterflies with gems and glitter and lots of bright colours they were for Mum to give them to her on mother's day. I have two cousins named Kaley and Marcus, we went with them to get craft things for our butterflies. I also got white letters that spelt out my name. I had a great holiday! By Lucy.

Hollie Chips

                                     Hollie Chips

Hollie Chips is a girl who is very observant and smart
she  kept track of her mother's morning routine. Hollie
was out on her street Puriti road playing one day she over heard someone's conversation she listened very carefully there were three men discussing a plan to
rule Puriti road and make it into a dog factory. Hollie
heard one of the men was named Bucscud he was the leader of it all. He said “we can rule Puriti road it is so easy because the girl at number four wants to leave this place because she hates children  and the man at number eight is so unhappy here he never smiles and the lady at the other house has dog poo on her lawn every morning and she is so poor she can't even afford to pay her bills” said Bucscud. Hollie was so terrified that she ran back to her house and told her mother the terrible news and then she could do something about it.
Hollie went down the street to the lady at number four Hollie knocked on the door the lady was wearing a white dressing gown and said “what do you want rat bag?” Hollie tried to talk to the lady but the grumpy old lady just swept her away off her doorstep. Hollie now was very nervous to go to the women at number five she knocked on the door the lady had red hair with knots in it “what now” said the lady “hi I'm Hollie what's your name Philippa
She said lazily Hollie had figured out a plan to help the people on Puriti road to stay in their homes.

I liked the story Hollie Chips because it is a good kid's book and it is awesome to read! I would recommend this book  for children from 7 to 12 years old. I rate Hollie Chips 8 out of 10. Written by Anna Gowan

The New Zealand Flag

The New Zealand flag has recently been voted to stay! I wanted it to stay because my great grandad fought in World War 2 while we still had the New Zealand flag and I think the current flag looks much better. I also think it should stay is because all the adults would have to get new licences with the new flag on them.
They think that our flag is too similar to Australia's if they think that Australia can just change their own.
I felt good when they announced to keep it. John Key spent lots of money that just went to waste.
He spent over $20 million on the new flag that is not
even staying so I think that was not the best idea. My mum and dad voted for the current one to stay because the people of New Zealand who fought in the war died with that flag and it is just a great flag so
I think that the New Zealand flag should stay how it is.

Easter is a day when we get chocolate eggs. The reason we give and receive Easter eggs is because
it is to celebrate a new life of Spring. It is traditional to eat hot cross buns to celebrate Good Friday.  The reason for the cross on the hot cross buns is for when Jesus got nailed to the cross . We celebrate Easter Sunday because it is the day that Jesus had died and it was the day he had risen from his grave. Every year Sophie and I get giant bunny’s made of chocolate. Mine is a dream chocolate bunny that is a princess and Sophie’s is a milk chocolate bunny that is in the forest.
Thousands of dollars is spent on Easter candy this makes Easter the second largest candy event leading after Halloween. For Easter my family does celebrate it but we just stay at home and enjoy the day together. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the full moon on the spring Equinox between March 22nd and April 25th. Did you know that 70% of Easter candy is purchased on chocolate and Americans spend $1.9 billion on Easter candy. The first Easter buckets given were meant to imitate a bird’s nest when eggs were placed inside the nest. Did you know that back in the old days they celebrated easter with real eggs but now they celebrate with chocolate eggs. My favourite thing about Easter is waking up to a surprise at the end of my bed!

                                                            Ngatea swimming sports

I really enjoyed swimming sports because it was really hot and it was nice to get into the cool water. The races I competed in were backstroke  freestyle and breaststroke.
I like to watch other people race and cheer them on. Doing team cheers was really

fun people were screaming out their cheers. I am in patiki and Charli Ashlee and I were in
relays and we won it! Toby Alec and Osten where our house leaders. I am very happy that I'm going to Hauraki plains swimming sports wich is on Monday. My placings were 1st in 2 lengths freestyle 3rd in 1 length freestyle and 1st in 1 length backstroke. I liked seeing Mrs Finlay racing as well. The whole time was really fun it was nice and hot and great to see everyone doing their best!
